What Makes The After Shine
🌟 Charlotte’s Character
"Charlotte is the heart of this novel. Her tenacity and fierce love for her family make her instantly relatable and likable. Readers will root for her as she navigates complex decisions and faces her fears in a world devoid of easy solutions. Taylor writes Charlotte with depth, balancing her youthful innocence with the heavy responsibility thrust upon her.
🌟 Immersive Setting
The stark, rural Nova Scotian landscape becomes almost a character in its own right. Taylor’s descriptions of the farm, the surrounding wilderness, and the remnants of the fallen world immerse readers in the story. This isolation amplifies the tension, underscoring the stakes of Charlotte’s decisions.
🌟 Themes of Growth and Survival
At its core, The After explores what it means to grow up in extraordinary circumstances. Themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the importance of connection weave through every chapter, resonating deeply with readers.
Why You’ll Love This Book
Taylor’s writing is both accessible and evocative, making it perfect for middle-grade and young adult readers while maintaining the emotional complexity that older readers can appreciate. Charlotte’s journey is gripping, and the pacing keeps readers engaged from start to finish. The balance of action and introspection ensures that the story never feels stagnant.
My Thoughts
The After is a triumph in middle-grade dystopian fiction. I was particularly moved by Charlotte’s bravery and the raw emotions she exhibits in protecting her family. Taylor crafts a story that is as heartwarming as it is suspenseful. Charlotte’s evolution from a cautious girl to a courageous young woman is inspiring.
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This book earns a glowing five stars for its masterful storytelling, relatable protagonist, and vivid world-building. Joanne Taylor has delivered a novel that readers will remember long after turning the final page.
Conclusion
Whether you’re a fan of dystopian tales or simply enjoy stories with strong, well-drawn characters, The After is a must-read. It’s a story about family, survival, and the courage to face the unknown—perfect for readers young and old. Don’t miss this poignant and beautifully written novel."

"Excellent Storytelling Creates the Perfect Series Opener. I settled immediately into the author's writing style. The world she created feels real, with interesting characters and a believable plot. The author doesn't overload readers with blocks of background information; the pieces come together naturally to "fill in" the reader about the past and move the story forward. There was not a single moment of the story that was boring or confusing, or that felt silly or contrived. I was fully engaged within the first couple of pages, and I have added the series to my "watch list" so that I can continue with the next book!
Great for Parents and Tween/Teen Readers. The story is interesting as it sets up the world for the series, builds some suspense and urgency and explores the teen main character's emotions and growth. It appeals perfectly to a tween or younger teen audience but is engaging and well-developed enough for an adult audience, too—especially those who enjoy clean reads without "shock-value" add-ins! The book fits the G rating but doesn't feel childish or undeveloped.
Would I Recommend The After by J. Taylor? "The After" is a great middle-grade dystopian novel that is age-appropriate and very well-developed. The novel ends with loose ends, so you'll be adding the series to your to-be-read list and looking forward to the next book. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and will definitely look to continue the series when a new novel is released!"

"This is an excellent story and well-written. I recommend it for middle school-age readers and older. It is emotional, relatable, and full of dynamic writing. The post-apocalyptic story is a narrative one that tells the story well.
This is not a long book and it being a captivating read it will not take long to read. Readers will keep turning pages to read more and before you know it the book is over. When reading this story you get elements of survival and connection with others. The resilience of people during this time is seen and readers are left feeling connected to this world and the people in it.
I recommend this book. I look forward to reading more from this author and this world. This is set to be a series and I look forward to reading the other books. It is a book that has many plus elements to consider from a great story with dynamic writing to being a G-rated book of clean reading. This is one to pick up."

SPOILER ALERT!
“J. Taylor’s The After is a beautifully layered post-apocalyptic coming-of-age novel that explores resilience, trust, and the quiet strength found in family bonds. Set in rural Nova Scotia, a decade after a deadly virus brought governments to collapse and societies to a halt, the story centres around 14-year-old Charlotte, whose life—though harsh—is marked by routine, discipline, and familial love.
Charlotte and her family have adapted to a new world shaped by scarcity and caution. Their isolate life is disrupted when Charlotte discovers an interloper has trespassed on their land. What follows is a rich, suspenseful tale where Charlotte is forced to make impossible choices: protect the fragile peace her family has built or explore the connection and danger the outsider might bring.
Taylor’s writing shines through its realism and emotional depth. The author masterfully captures the small, sensory details of rural survival—hauling water, preserving food, patrolling fence lines—while building a quiet tension that pulls the reader forward. The introduction of Anna, a mysterious girl who has been secretly watching Charlotte’s family, brings a psychological complexity that transforms the novel from a survival story into something more intimate and urgent.
Charlotte’s internal conflict—between the fear taught to her by necessity and the hope stirred by human connection—is rendered with nuance and authenticity. Her voice feels age appropriate, sincere, and fiercely human. Moments of warmth, humour, and tenderness, especially with her protective brother Samuel and sharp-witted Gran, bring balance to the book’s darker themes.
Though marketed as young adult fiction, The After appeals broadly to readers who enjoy character-driven dystopian stories grounded in emotional truth. The post-virus world is convincingly drawn, but the heart of the novel lies in Charlotte’s emotional journey as she transitions from child to young woman, grappling with questions of identity, courage, and moral responsibility.
With vivid prose, strong characters, and thought-provoking themes, The After is both a gripping survival story and a poignant meditation on what it means to grow up in a broken world. Fans of The Hunger Games, Station Eleven and The Giver will find much to love here. Highly recommended. Book two can’t come soon enough.”

My thoughts on The After
"The After is the first book in J. Taylor’s After Series. It’s a middle-grade dystopian story that grabs your attention from the first page. At 183 pages, it’s the perfect length for young readers but with enough depth to keep older ones intrigued, too.
Buy bestselling books online
The story centers around Charlotte, a resilient 14-year-old who feels incredibly real and relatable. Whether you’re her age or much older, her journey of facing challenges head-on is something everyone can connect with. Charlotte’s growth and determination make her an inspiring character, and her experiences bring out important themes like courage and perseverance.
Taylor’s world-building is top-notch. The dystopian setting is vivid and believable, immersing the reader in a society that feels both imaginative and eerily possible. The details of the world and its struggles are so well done that the reader can almost see and feel everything as they read.
What really sets “The After” apart is how Taylor tells such a gripping story without ever resorting to cheap thrills or inappropriate content. There’s no need for shock value or foul language here. The plot is strong enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. This makes it an excellent choice for younger readers while still being thought-provoking and engaging for adults.
“The After” is a fantastic start to what promises to be an exciting series. Taylor’s skillful storytelling, memorable characters, and richly developed world make it a must-read for anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction. Plus, the absence of gratuitous content makes it accessible and enjoyable for middle-grade readers yet still layered enough for an older audience. It’s an excellent example of how powerful and thoughtful fiction can be."

"The After by Joanne Taylor is a deeply engaging and thought-provoking read that takes us on a journey through both the outer and inner worlds of a young girl facing a post-apocalyptic reality. Charlotte, the protagonist, is a girl forced to grow up too quickly, and the author paints her struggles with such honesty and depth that it's impossible not to feel connected to her. The quiet life Charlotte has built with her family on their rural farm is disrupted when an intruder appears, forcing her to confront fears of the outside world and the very nature of her existence. It’s a delicate line between trust and survival, and the author explores that with sensitivity and real emotion.
The author doesn’t rush her growth or make it overly dramatic but instead allows her to mature at her own pace, showing how survival and personal growth don’t always go hand in hand. There’s an understated beauty in how Charlotte learns to navigate fear, hope, and responsibility, all while managing her relationships with the people she loves.
The storytelling is brilliant, engaging, easy to grasp and compelling enough to keep me turning page after page. The length is just perfect enough for young readers to appreciate the book and for the grown ups too. The more I read, the more I found myself drawn into the story, unable to resist finding out what would happen next. It’s a powerful story that will stay with me for a long time. I'd like to read the next part too. I absolutely adore that book cover too!"

"I love a book that can grab my attention right from the start and keep it throughout the length of the book. This book was just that. My attention didn’t wane at all while reading. I love dystopian books and this one was great. Books dealing with viruses in their dystopian world are some of my favorites if done right and this one was. I loved that this one is a middle grade novel because it felt like it will be very relatable for kids that age. The main character is 14 and I think this will appeal to readers from about age 7-14. I read it with my daughter who is 7 and she really enjoyed it and got into the story just like I did. She kept asking me to keep reading because she was so invested. This book also kept us on the edge of our seats trying to figure out what was going to happen next.
If you’re looking for a fun middle grade dystopian read with an amazing female main character, then you should check this out."

"Imagine a world where a virus has closed borders, toppled governments, and left survivors to fend for themselves. Scary right? 👀
Fast forward ten years, and we meet fourteen-year-old Charlotte, holding down the fort in rural Nova Scotia with her family. Life is tough, but manageable….until an unexpected visitor shows up. 🤯
Charlotte faces a dilemma: should she keep this stranger a secret or embrace the possibility of friendship?
As the outside world starts creeping in, Charlotte’s peaceful life is shaken, and she must find the courage to step up and protect everything she holds dear.
Joanne Taylor creates a gripping story of survival, growth, and tough choices in The After.
With rich storytelling and a compelling FMC, this book is a stellar start to what promises to be a great series. I’m already counting down the days until I get my hands on the next instalment! 🛤️✨"

"The After starts off the new series by J Taylor, also, called The After. I was hooked right from the start and was intrigued with this story all throughout until the very last page. I am not a huge fan of dystopian fiction but this one held my attention and kept me guessing as to what was to happen next. I have no doubt it would be relatable for pre teen and teen readers. Even though I am not the marketed age for this book, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I adored the main character Charlotte and taking this journey with her. I found she was courageous, brave, and a good role model. I wanted to see what would happen to her and love that there will be more to come for her in the future. I love that there was a teaser in getting a glimpse into what is to come. I can not wait.
I am going to give The After a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe that fans and lovers of Middle Grade / Young Adult / Dystopian Fiction will not want to miss out on reading this one. I am eager to get my hands on the next installment of The After series, Survival, to see what is in store for Charlotte.
I received a paperback copy of J Taylor’s The After from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion."

"This is an absolutely brilliant book, perfectly suitable for younger audiences and enjoyable for, ahem, older people too 😊 but yeah, I’d say this is a perfect read for curious middle-graders – the main character is a teen girl and well-written one, and the subject matter of a virus outbreak is somewhat too relatable to anyone nowadays. With a hefty touch of dystopian reality, this one is definitely something I’ll be looking forward to book #2."

"J. Taylor’s The After is a captivating middle-grade dystopian novel set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by a deadly virus. It follows 14-year-old Charlotte, who lives an isolated life on her family’s farm in rural Nova Scotia. When a mysterious intruder breaches their property, Charlotte must navigate between fear and the desire for connection, setting off a chain of events with significant consequences.
Charlotte’s relatable character is the heart of the story. Her courage, naivety, and emotional growth resonate with readers, while her bond with Anna, a newfound friend, deepens the narrative. The book explores themes of trust, survival, and resilience, making it both age-appropriate and thought-provoking.
Taylor’s world-building immerses readers in a society shaped by fear and isolation. The vivid depiction of farm life and external threats feels eerily relevant and adds depth to the story. The steady pacing builds toward a fast-paced, thrilling conclusion, introducing a promising antagonist and setting up the series beautifully.

"My Review of The AfterI’m so glad I took the chance to read The After by J. Taylor. This book captivated my attention from beginning to end. I’m eager to read more of the series when it comes out.
Given all the sicknesses we face, I often wonder what our world will be like in the future. I can easily imagine us being isolated and having limited human interactions. Gosh, my husband has watched enough sci-fi movies to make my imagination run wild.
In The After, the author captures the essence of what Charlotte and Anna must contend with at such a young age. My youngest daughter just turned 13, so it was easy for me to imagine her as Charlotte. Reading about the things these girls had to do on their own made me cringe, but I was also impressed with their abilities and the relationships they had built.
The After is a WHOLESOME read. It has enough drama and adventure to keep the reader captivated. There is a strong enough cliffhanger to make you eager to read future books. This book leaves the reader with tons of things to ponder and consider. I highly recommend it for any middle schooler and/or adults looking for wholesome sci-fi reading."

"I haven’t read many dystopian novels for middle schoolers, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from The After. J Taylor did an excellent job with The After. It is a can’t-put-it-down book.
The story is set in a future where everyone is isolated and a bit afraid. A virus has killed many. Charlotte and her family live an isolated life on the family farm in Nova Scotia. Charlotte has never seen another child her age (early teens). She lives with her father, brother, and grandmother. Several times a year, her father and brother travel to several farms some distance away to trade for things they do not grow on their farm. When interacting with these other families, they keep their distance and cover their faces.
Charlotte discovers a break in their fence. She later discovers a girl about her age who has been visiting their farm and helping herself to eggs and milk. The two become friends. Charlotte and Anna become friends.
The story is an intriguing one. Circumstances occur that require Charlotte and Anna to use their wits as they need to leave the only place Charlotte has ever known. Throughout the story, Charlotte learns to trust and rely on Anna, the first non-family member she’s ever trusted.
Taylor ends the book with a cliffhanger, making me anxious to read the next book in the series.
The After would be appropriate for a K-12 Christian school library. Mature fifth graders and up would enjoy this dystopian story. One thing librarians will need to be aware of is that Canadian English spellings are used throughout the book which may be confusing to some readers located in the US."

"Young Adult Fiction is a genre that I still enjoy every once in a while. I was really intrigued to read this novel as the synopsis is really interesting. THE AFTER by Joanne Taylor is the latest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in The After Series.
WOW, this book really captivated me from the very beginning and I didn't stop reading until I finished the book. The main character is in the book is 14yr old Charlotte, who lives in Nova Scotia with her family on their farm. Charlotte feels isolated from others due to a virus that ravaged the Country and Government 10yrs ago. Her life is changed when she meets a girl her age, Anna. Anna and Charlotte become friends rather quickly and their friendship is good for Charlotte as she comes out of her shell and the adventures she has are very intriguing. I LOVE how the author not only gives a glimpse at the past and current events, but goes into the future. The book is filled with Mystery and Intrigue. It is Dystopia based, which is a genre that I have come to enjoy. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone, but the age group of 10yrs through 15yrs old would truly enjoy this book. GREAT BOOK!"

"This grabbed my attention from the first page and I never lost focus. Charlotte is a young girl who lives isolated with her family as a deadly virus is circulating. Although I think this is the best book for a teenage child and I am well out of that age bracket I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I am even more excited to continue reading this series! The characters are experiencing a unexpected deadly virus and are doing everything in their power to protect themselves. I loved the plot which had my heart pounding through my chest and there was one scene that tears pouring down my face. I found myself intrigued and dying to continue reading to unravel what the outcome would be."

"I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This sequel to The After starts off running and stays that way throughout. Getting through your teenage years is hard enough, but doing it when a pandemic has wiped out a majority of the population, including your family, is nearly impossible. Unless, that is, you are incredibly resourceful like Charlotte, Anna, and Luke. They reminded me of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. While this book is considered a young adult story, adult fans of post apocalyptic survivor stories will be entertained, too. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series; I need to know these characters I’ve grown to admire have a happy ending (fingers crossed!)"

"J. Taylor: I’m just starting Chapter 13, here at the cottage!!!! I love the story and the characters you've created! I'm totally drawn in!! Will Charlotte tell dear Gran about her new friend Anna? If Gran dies, I don't think Charlotte will ever forgive herself for allowing Anna access into their home. Or will Anna save Gran's life by finding Charlotte's dad and brother and bringing them home in time to save Gran's life? Anna knows the territory, she's been on the move and living rough since her own Mother and brothers died of the virus. Does Anna have the virus? She's the only intruder to Charlotte's farm in a long, long time. Who else could it be if not Anna? Inquiring minds want to know. I think I may be up to the wee hours of the morn to find out the ending!!!!"

My Thoughts on Survival
"I love a survival story that puts relationships at the center, and Survival does exactly that. Charlotte and Anna’s bond is the backbone of the book—resilient, messy, and real. The wilderness challenges feel tactile (what to eat, how to stay warm, where to sleep), while the emotional stakes—jealousy, fear, and grit—keep the pages flying.
The plot moves with steady suspense, punctuated by a few “oh no” moments that will land perfectly with middle-grade readers. The arrival of an outsider adds just enough uncertainty to test both girls in believable ways. I especially appreciated how the story balances survival craft with quiet, human choices—when to speak up, when to forgive, and how to keep going when plans fall apart.
If I’m nitpicking, a couple transitions felt a touch brisk—I would have happily lingered longer in certain scenes. But that’s also part of the book’s momentum: this is a story that moves.
- Rating: 5/5
- Perfect for: Readers 10–15 who love wilderness adventure, friendship stories, and gentle suspense
- Vibe: Heart-forward survival with real stakes and lots of hope
- Content Notes: PG (per tour guide); no profanity or graphic content; a brief kiss between teens
- Themes: Resilience, friendship under pressure, problem-solving, trust, found family"

My thoughts: After being forced off Charlotte’s family property by an invader, teenage girls Charlotte and Anna are homeless in the Nova Scotian wilderness. Their survival skills are put to the test when they settle upon a different property that isn’t as abandoned as they believed. To complicate their lives further, a disaster forces them to flee once again into a world plagued by a deadly virus, with no government, no home, and no one to keep them safe. These girls are the heart of this series, with their endearing characters as they endure a riveting plot that keeps them on their toes. This is an amazing series for middle-grade, YA readers, and adults alike.

"Survival Continues the Dystopian Adventure. The author does an excellent job pulling readers into the next step of her characters' adventures. Various obstacles and challenges to survival test the girls, and the author presents these challenges in a way that is easy to read and engaging for middle-school readers. The emotions are well-portrayed, and the strength of character and the bond of friendship form the heart of the story. The author tackles the realities of survival along with some of the relatable realities of growing up and relationships.
Expect a Clean Read. I often find tween/teen dystopian novels jump too quickly into romance and violence--but, the author here offers a clean read that your tweens and younger teens can read without worrying about the content themes. The girls face obstacles to survival (and challenges to their relationship)--and a love interest--but the nature of the story remains clean and a family-friendly read.
Would I Recommend Survival by J. Taylor? I enjoyed this novel. While you could read this book alone, I would recommend reading the first book in the series to help better understand the characters' situations and the background of their bond. The novel is fast-paced and engaging, with action-packed scenes. This pace makes some of the scenes play out rather quickly, but the style and flow of the book are perfect for younger teen readers. If you enjoy middle grade dystopian fiction with strong characters and an engaging, clean storyline, this series in an easy one to pick up and enjoy from the first pages."

🧭 The Story: Survival Isn’t Just Physical—It’s Emotional
Set in the wilds of Nova Scotia after an unspecified catastrophic event, Survival follows Charlotte and Anna as they navigate the brutal demands of staying alive. From building shelter and sourcing food to coping with emotional upheaval, the girls are forced to mature quickly in this new world.
But just when they begin to find a rhythm, a mysterious newcomer throws off their fragile balance. The tension escalates, and a devastating turn of events splits them apart—physically and emotionally. The stakes couldn’t be higher as each girl struggles to find her way back, not just to safety, but to each other.
💬 What I Loved
I was immediately drawn to Charlotte, our main character. She’s not just brave—she’s clever, resilient, and refreshingly real. The dialogue throughout the book is a huge highlight. It feels natural and unforced, something that’s rare in dystopian fiction aimed at younger readers. The characters talk like actual kids under stress, with all the emotions, fears, and sharp instincts you’d expect.
Another standout element? The survival tips woven into the story. Whether it’s purifying water, building shelter, or staying warm, Survival offers valuable lessons without feeling preachy. You’re not just reading about survival—you’re learning it. It gave me that “what would I do?” kind of vibe that sticks with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
👧 Characters Who Feel Like Friends
Charlotte and Anna’s friendship is the emotional heart of the story. It’s raw and real, with highs and lows that mirror what real-life relationships look like under pressure. Their bond gets tested—not just by external threats, but by trust, jealousy, and miscommunication. These are two fully-formed characters whose struggles feel personal.
The mysterious stranger who enters their world adds just the right amount of tension. Is he friend or foe? His presence disrupts the dynamic, forcing the girls to reassess what they know about survival, loyalty, and themselves.
🌲 A Setting That’s Beautiful and Brutal
Taylor paints the Nova Scotia wilderness in vivid detail. It’s both stunning and treacherous, much like the story itself. From icy rivers to dense woods, the setting becomes its own character—one that tests the girls at every turn. You can feel the cold, hear the wind, and smell the pine. It's immersive in the best way.
🧠 Themes That Go Deeper
Survival isn’t just about staying alive. It’s about resilience, friendship, trust, and personal growth. The book doesn’t shy away from hard truths: people change, fear can drive a wedge between even the closest friends, and sometimes being strong means knowing when to ask for help.
There’s also an underlying commentary on how young people can rise to challenges in unexpected ways. These aren’t adult heroes in kid-sized bodies. Charlotte and Anna are realistically young, and their decisions reflect that—but so does their strength.
🧭 Final Thoughts
If you enjoy fast-paced survival stories with emotional depth and engaging characters, Survival is a great pick. Joanne Taylor delivers a thrilling sequel that’s both educational and entertaining, especially for middle grade and early YA readers.
You’ll walk away not just with a deeper appreciation for wilderness survival, but for the inner strength it takes to keep going when everything feels lost. I'm definitely excited to see where The After Series goes next!

MY REVIEW
"I really enjoyed After, the first book in this series. I had fingers and toes crossed that I’d enjoy the second book too. I did. Actually, I enjoyed it even more. Especially the continued friendship between Charlotte and Anna. The two young teens were there for each other when the pandemic swept across the globe. Now they’re back.
Charlotte and Anna are homeless now so they search for a new place to live. They find one, but soon have to leave it too. Times just keep getting tougher for the girls. But, they’re getting tougher too. Every day is a new test. For Shelter. For food. For their very lives.
This series is a story of two young girls trying to survive a pandemic. To me, it’s also an extreme test of courage and compassion. Whether your a young teen or an adult, this story will make you feel all the feels. I’m excited to read the next book, Invasion. The title alone makes me think the two brave girls will be put to the ultimate test of survival. I hope they come through it and can’t wait to find out."

"This is the second book in The After series. Charlotte and Anna are on their own trying to survive. This story had a few heart wrenching moments. This book reminded me of The Last of Us in the way that the girls were on the run, looking for ways to survive.
Survival is an intense and heart wrenching story."

"This dystopian series is filled with action, always moving forward. I binged books 2 and 3 this time, and my review is for both. Fast-paced, focused on two young women, Anna and Charlotte, who are like sisters now that the world is gone. The world suffered a terrible pandemic, and the virus destroyed humanity as we know it. This is a book without zombies, but it has the eeriness and need for survival of worlds like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead (some of my favorites that I know). The author gives us a lot of details, and the characters are very smart, utilizing their knowledge acquired from the world before or from their family. Perfect for fans of the Hatchet. This keeps them safe. In Survival, they find a house that can become their safe haven, but the arrival of a teen leads them to high-stakes action. The story goes from two characters to a cast until they get separated.
Book 2 is perfect for fans of The Hatchet, with all the elements and understanding of how to survive in a real-life catastrophic event. The connection between the characters keeps them alert. This is more than just surviving. The plot grows into something larger, political, and community, but the books are easy to read and without triggers or adult content."

"I enjoyed reading the first book from J Taylor's The After series, which was, also called The After. I wanted to keep reading the series to see what happens next. I was happy to have the opportunity to the second installment, Survival. I do want to caution fellow readers that since this is a series, it would be best to start off with book one, The After, for a better reading experience. Once again, I was hooked with Charlotte and Anna’s story. It was great catching up with them in Nova Scotia and seeing what is going on in their world now. I loved taking this adventure with the two that included action, mystery, suspense, and danger. They were faced with unexpected challenges that I wanted to see how resilient they would be to survive. I admired their bond and determination. Even though I am not the targeted audience as an adult, I still greatly enjoyed the book.
I am going to give Survival a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe that fans and lovers of Middle Grade / Young Adult / Dystopian Fiction will not want to miss out on reading this one. I am eager to get my hands on the next installment of The After series, The Invasion, to see what is in store for Charlotte."

"My Review 🖍️ This book we get to see Charlotte and Anna's bond solidify and I loved each and every minute. The effects of the virus are definitely lingering and the girls are smart and strong finding ways to survive. They need to seek out food and shelter but a encounter with a stranger may threaten what they have built. I was so happy to be able to read this book and I was not disappointed. It has everything I remember from the first book survivalist instincts, danger and friendships and of course a couple of cute animals. The story is solid and beautifully written with heart. I felt excited while reading and I could also feel dread from the unknown."

"Going to keep my reviews for both books semi brief so I avoid spoiling anything! I read the first book in this series last year and really enjoyed it. I was happy to see that the series was going to continue. Book two was a great follow up, I loved seeing how much the characters were adapting to their new situation. My heart broke for these characters, especially Charlotte, having dealt with another loss. The pacing in this sequel was on point and I was focused until the end."

"I absolutely loved book one in this series, so I had to read the next two! We are once again back with Anna and Charlotte as they are trying to find a new home in this apocalyptic world that they find themselves completely alone in. I loved getting to know the new characters in each book, and I was constantly rooting for them. These are two very strong young women who have to do literally everything on their own! I couldn’t even imagine having the type of discipline they have. If you’re a fan of dystopian fiction, I highly recommend this series!"

"This was really great! Don't be put off by the young looking character on the cover as this is a really well written, YA adventure. As an adult reader , I found it a really well developed story, it held my attention from start right to the very end, leaving me wanting to know more. There is some angst but not too bad I found. A really great read!"

"It’s such great fun when you find a series and it keeps getting better book by book. How does that happen? Maybe it’s your attachment to the characters. Maybe it’s what events are focused on. Or, perhaps it because you begin to grasp the author’s vision. Begin to see where she’s taking you. Or, maybe something else entirely. Regardless, The After series is one of those that gets better and better.
The After, the first book, was the introduction to a dystopian way of life. Then the characters start to take hold of you. That’s where the anxiety sets in. Will things get worse? They do. How will two young teenage girls manage to survive? Can’t tell you that. The spoiler thing. But you’ll be wanting to reach the end and find out. Then you’ll be wanting more. Relax. The second book, Survival continues the series.
And then theirs the third book, Invasion. I think it’s the most intense in the series. Things get harder, darker, more serious. But the characters shine light through all that. Sometimes hope builds. Faith in humanity rises. I love character driven stories and these characters will stay with me."

"Book three, was the best in the series and that says something since I’ve been thoroughly enjoying all of them. The characters continue to develop and even though this is YA, the characters are very adult due to their new life. The author did a great job of keeping the adventure going and having some lighthearted moments along the way. The writing, pacing, descriptions, and characters continue to be on point. "The Invasion Takes Readers on the Next Step of this Dystopian Adventure. The author has created a fantastic character team that has grown along with the growing challenges and adventures faced in the series. The book is fast-paced and engaging from beginning to end. The pace keeps the story moving, preventing younger readers from getting bored, but it is well developed and interesting enough that the scenes are not too abrupt to engage older teens and adult readers. I love the author's writing style. She can develop scenes clearly and quickly without taking anything away from the story or its characters.
Expect a Clean Read. This series takes on some serious dystopian challenges--but the author offers a clean read that your tweens and younger teens can read without worrying about the content themes. The characters certainly face challenges and situations that tug the heartstrings. Still, they are also handled well and in a G/PG writing style that makes the story more heartpounding and heartwarming than the shock-value content of some teen dystopian pieces.
Would I Recommend The Invasion by J. Taylor? I loved this series, but this book was my favorite so far. I have enjoyed watching the characters grow and find their paths. I recommend reading the series in order to better understand the characters' situations and the background of their growing bond. The novel is fast-paced and engaging, with action-packed scenes that are perfect for younger teen readers, but still detailed enough to hold the interest of older readers. If you enjoy middle-grade dystopian fiction with strong characters and an engaging, clean storyline, this series is an easy one to pick up and enjoy from the first pages. This book doesn't tie up all the loose ends, so you can be sure that I will be watching for more books in the series!"

"I enjoyed reading the first two books from J Taylor's The After series, The After and Survival. I wanted to find out what could happen next with Charlotte and Ann. I was honored to have the chance to read the third installment, The Invasion. Since this is part of a series, it would be best to read the series in order. I was excited to jump right in with Charlotte and Anna doing all they can to protect their homeland. I find that they are good role models for young girls. I admired their strength, courage, and bravery. I felt like I was part of their journey as they are faced with danger, adventure, suspense, and action. I wanted to see what would become of the two and thought they made a great team. I found this tale to be full of hope, friendship, entertainment, and determination. A fabulous way to get away from the chaos of current events.
I am going to give The Invasion a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe that fans and lovers of clean Middle Grade / Young Adult / Dystopian Fiction will not want to miss out on reading this one. I would love to read more from J Taylor in the future to see what else she has in store for her fans and readers.

"My thoughts: Charlotte and Anna’s perilous adventure in this dystopian, post-apocalyptic version of Nova Scotia continues, taking them on a new and even more dangerous quest to survive. They get pulled into the Resistance, whose mission is to stabilize the government and protect Canada from invasion. These two girls are such vivacious and unique characters, drawing readers into the story. Although this series is targeted at middle-grade readers, it could definitely be enjoyed by the YA crowd and adults alike."

"With The Invasion, J. Taylor delivers a poignant, emotionally layered finale to The After Series. While Survival focused on rebuilding and resilience, this final installment broadens the lens—forcing Charlotte and Anna to confront not just the struggle to live, but the question of why life is worth rebuilding. The tone is slightly older, more introspective, yet still perfectly accessible for its middle-grade audience.
J. Taylor’s writing shines brightest in the moments of tension between hope and fear. The girls’ journey beyond the safety of their small world introduces new faces and new dangers, but also glimmers of community and renewal. The pacing remains brisk, with emotional pauses that land beautifully. Readers will feel the weight of every decision as the girls grapple with loyalty, forgiveness, and the meaning of home in a fractured world.
What makes Book Three stand out is its heart. Taylor balances suspense and empathy in equal measure, never losing sight of her characters’ humanity. The closing chapters are both satisfying and bittersweet—a fitting conclusion to a trilogy that celebrates courage, friendship, and the quiet bravery of ordinary people rebuilding their lives."

I couldn’t even imagine having the type of discipline they have. If you’re a fan of dystopian fiction, I highly recommend this series!"

"Book 3 is more focused on government, territory, and protection. They join the resistance, bringing all their positive skills. Still keeps the fast pace and exciting high stakes. This volume feels a little more YA than middle grade when the characters are tested.
Goes from two characters to high stakes countries war."

The Story: War, Resistance, and Two Brave Girls
In this third chapter, Charlotte and Anna are no longer just trying to survive—they're trying to protect what's left of their home. With Canada’s government in ruins and invaders pushing in, the girls are swept into the heart of the Resistance, forced to make decisions that go far beyond foraging or building shelter.
The threat of capture is constant. They're always on the move, navigating unfamiliar land, trying to stay ahead of a relentless enemy. And while they’re still just teens, the courage they show is massive.
💬 What I Loved
Charlotte continues to shine as the strong, smart, relatable protagonist we’ve grown to admire. I love how her survival skills evolve and how she keeps pushing forward, no matter how tired or afraid she is. That sense of "what would I do in this situation?" is still strong in this book—and it's part of what makes this series so fun and immersive.
The tension stays high throughout. Whether it’s a narrow escape or a quiet moment where doubt creeps in, you’re always turning the page wondering what’s next.
And Anna? She’s growing too. Their bond remains a core strength of the series, and it’s refreshing to see it tested and deepened rather than falling into clichés.
⚠️ What Didn’t Work for Me
While the survival and emotional elements stayed strong, I personally didn’t connect as much with the government/resistance storyline. The broader political angle pulled the story away from what I loved most in the first two books—raw survival and close-knit personal stakes. That said, this could totally be a matter of personal taste. Readers who enjoy dystopian military or resistance-style stories might find this arc exciting and well-paced.
🏞️ Setting the Stage for War
One thing that still holds strong in Taylor’s writing is her setting. The unfamiliar terrain, the looming threat of war, the atmosphere of tension—it’s all vividly drawn. You can feel the cold uncertainty, and the way danger seems to be hiding around every tree or behind every decision.
Themes: Growth, Grit, and the Cost of Freedom
What continues to shine in The After Series is its emotional core. This isn’t just a war story. It’s a story about young people pushed beyond what’s fair or reasonable, and how they hold onto hope anyway. It’s about resilience, resourcefulness, and that human instinct to keep going, even when it’s hard.
The theme of sacrifice starts to take a stronger role here too—what you're willing to give up for a cause, a friend, or a country.
🧭 Final Thoughts
The Invasion is a tense, action-filled continuation of Charlotte and Anna’s journey. While the political plotlines didn’t fully land for me, the heart of the series—two brave girls trying to survive and do the right thing—remains compelling and powerful.
If you've read the first two books, you'll want to see where this chapter leads. And if you're new to The After Series, this is a great reason to start from book one and take the ride all the way through."

"This was an intense and fast paced third story in The After series. Anna and Charlotte’s world grew bigger as they got involved in the Resistance group. I wasn’t sure how they would finish everything that needed to be wrapped up in this story but there will be another book in the series. This story was more heartwarming than the first two.
The Invasion is a great middle grade story!"
